Course Overview:
Evaluating the risk of prenatal alcohol and drug exposure is one of the hardest decisions adoptive parents must make. In this course, Dawn Davenport, Executive Director of Creating a Family, the national infertility & adoption education and support nonprofit, interviews Dr. Ira Chasnoff, one of the nation’s leading researchers on long-term effects of prenatal alcohol and drug exposure. Dr. Chasnoff is the author of The Mystery of Risk, president of the Children’s Research Triangle, and a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago.
Participants will be able to:
- Describe the effects of alcohol consumption at different points during the pregnancy.
- List common symptoms of prenatal cigarette exposure.
- List common symptoms of prenatal alcohol exposure.
- List common symptoms of prenatal marijuana exposure.
- Name three factors parents adopting internationally can use to assess the likelihood of prenatal alcohol exposure.
- Identify three factors that determine how prenatal alcohol exposure affects a child.
- Describe the physical symptoms of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
